Selected Achievements

¨        Instrumental in devising a business and marketing strategy which delivered a 12 million dollar turnover within 3 years of the business starting.

¨        Directed design, development, QA and distribution of WildTangent’s 3D web technology, one of the most widely adopted media players on the Internet other than Flash and the foundation of WildTangent’s growth from start-up to 130 staff, attracting $51 million funding.

¨        Planned and co-ordinated product strategy for Harlequin’s electronic publishing division - directing software development, QA and delivery, establishing Harlequin as Adobe’s most formidable competitor and increasing yearly revenue from almost nothing to over £30 million.

¨        Invented an efficient way of delivering maps online, purchased by Google for half a million dollars – analysed existing solutions and developed a mechanism that reduced server requirements over 10-fold and dramatically improved the user experience.

¨        Managed $8 million budget for WildTangent’s software and systems development. Investors often praised us for running a tight ship and continued to invest after the dot-com bubble burst.

¨        Designed a game delivery system, satisfying Hewlett Packard’s Marketing and QA, giving WildTangent a channel to HP customers and now shipped by all major PC makers.

¨        Designed and developed WildTangent’s highly optimised and robust automatic software update mechanism, used to update software on over 70 million PCs, allowing cheap rapid distribution of functionality and patches.

¨        Foresaw Harlequin reaching market saturation and revenues falling, so devised an upgrade and maintenance policy leading to yearly revenue equivalent to over 10% of cumulative sales.

¨        Transformed Selima’s HR suite from ‘also-ran’ to class leader by freeing up time to focus on enhancements, quadrupling developer productivity and cutting site implementation time 5x, while managing multiple customer projects and implementations.

¨        Rescued pivotal multi-million pound deal by convincing a very sceptical customer to reconsider. The deal launched a major product and remains a key selling point 11 years later.


Career History

2003 – 2007      Head of Vision Development, Selima Software Ltd, Sheffield

Selima develops Payroll and Human Resources software for public and private sector

·        Directed architectural design and development process of the HR suite, turning it from a sideline into the key selling product, generating 75% of new revenue.

·        Built up the strength and ability of the development team, improving productivity 4-fold, ending fire fighting, improving robustness and making time to focus on new functionality.

·        Managed many projects, implementing HR and Payroll, working with customers to establish realistic requirements and timescales, efficiently delivering large complex business critical systems.

1998 – 2003      Technical Director & Co-Founder, WildTangent Inc, Seattle

WildTangent develops web software for 3D product development and software distribution.

·        Headhunted to direct WildTangent’s technology architecture, development strategy, QA and distribution, growing the engineering organisation from start-up to 90 staff.

·        Managed multi-disciplinary teams on large-scale complex projects ensuring timely delivery of projects to customers including Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, Electronic Arts and AOL.

·        Designed, produced and shipped a web 3D graphical engine - installed on 70 million PC's.

·        Designed, developed, optimised and debugged very large scale software delivery services, now shipped by HP, Dell, Sony, Gateway and other PC suppliers.

1990 – 1998      Technical Product Manager, Harlequin Ltd, Cambridge

Harlequin develops printing software and intelligence data analysis tools.

·        Led the development strategy, steering the printing software from embryonic product to market leader, with yearly revenue exceeding £30 million.

·        Provided technical consultancy to the development and QA teams - designing and optimising algorithms, data structures, user interfaces and automated QA processes.

·        Managed multi-site development, setting up source control and task management across 5 development sites consisting 75+ technical staff.

1985 – 1990      Technical Director, Bensasson & Chalmers Ltd, Cambridge

·        Started as a developer on project management software, later promoted to Technical Director.
